Exhibition and itinerary of the largest Roman villa in the province of Castelló, inhabited between the 1st and 5th centuries. Built around three courtyards, we can find the remains of the owners’ dwelling, the domestic zones for the workers and the slaves, and a work area with mills, a pottery workshop and several warehouses.
Between the mountains and the sea
The villa of Vinamargo is located in a privileged place, near the sea and the two main communication routes: the Caminàs Road and the Via Augusta. Built in the middle of the 1st century AD, during its four hundred years of existence it was remodelled and enlarged before being definitively abandoned by the middle of the 5th century.
The remains preserved nowadays are the foundations of the walls on which earth walls were raised, which must have been painted in bright colors. The rooms were built around several courtyards that divided the space into three areas: the pars urbana, where the owners lived and whose private baths are preserved; the pars rustica or domestic area, where workers and slaves lived, and the pars fructuaria, where produce were transformed and stored with mills, warehouses and a pottery work-shop.
With 3,000 m2 excavated, it is the largest Roman villa in the province of Castelló, so consolidating its remains and emphasizing their value through the Interpretation Centre was a necessary step to preserve this historical site for the future and to inform the public about the villa.
